From students to protectors: Water in Santa Cruz and its use in the Mining Industry

DEGREE IN GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES, RECEIVED AT THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH. RESIDENT IN THE PROVINCE OF SANTA CRUZ SINCE 1987. HE WORKS AS A RESEARCHER AT THE NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN PATAGONIA (UNPA), IN ITS BEGINNINGS IN RELATION TO THE EXPLOITATION OF CLAY AND KAOLINS AND ITS INDUSTRIAL USE AND THEN DERIVE IN THE STUDY AND KNOWLEDGE OF THE PALI AIKE VOLCANIC COMPLEX AND THE MODELING OF THE LANDSCAPE BY GLACIAL ACTION IN THE LAST MILLION YEARS IN THE EXTREME SOUTH OF THE PROVINCE OF SANTA CRUZ IN WHICH HE CONTINUES HIS RESEARCH TOGETHER TO PROFESSIONAL ARCHAEOLOGISTS. HE WAS PART OF THE COMMISSION TO MONITOR THE IMPACT OF THE ASH RESULTING FROM THE ERUPTION OF THE HUDSON VOLCANO. HE JOINED THE STAFF OF THE UNDERSECRETARIAT OF ENVIRONMENT IN THE AREA OF PETROLEUM ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL. HE IS CURRENTLY PROVINCIAL DIRECTOR OF MINING AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT OF THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR MINING AND PROFESSOR IN THE NATURAL RESOURCES ENGINEERING CAREER OF THE UNPA IN THE SUBJECTS PRINCIPLES OF GEOLOGY AND WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT. IT COLLABORATES WITH CIVIL PROTECTION ON ISSUES SUCH AS FLOODS, EARTHQUAKES, WATER RESOURCES, AMONG OTHERS. IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR HE WORKED AS EXPLORATION GEOLOGIST (ANGLO GOLD -MINORCO – PEREZ COMPANC) AND SUPERINTENDENT OF SSyMA (MINERA SANTA CRUZ)
Resumen
Presentation aimed at providing knowledge to secondary school students who attend the meeting, addressing two central themes: the role of secondary school students as future controllers and protectors of water resources, both surface and underground in the province and second, employment of it by the metal mining industry in Santa Cruz. Information will be offered on its origin in the different water basins, its surface runoff, employment and consumption by the populations close to the extractive activity. Introduction to the knowledge of both surface and underground water, as well as information on how the mining industry uses the water resource safely without affecting quality and supply. Likewise, reference all the measures used to guarantee safe use and not affect the environment. Emphasis on the implementation of sustainable and advanced technologies to minimize the water footprint of the mining industry in water resources hand in hand with existing regulations and controls.
